KOCHI: Fr. C.A. Abraham Corepiscopa passed away in Kochi on Monday. He was 90.

The funeral will take place in a specially erected vault attached to the Malankara Catholic church founded by him at Pothanikad in 1958.

A scholar in English who specialised in poetry and an authority on St. James’ liturgy, he was the first Orthodox priest from India to obtain a degree from Oxford University, where he read English Literature and researched on T.S. Eliot in the 1950s. He was taught by among others C.S. Lewis. He took his M.Litt. from Oxford specialising in T.S. Eliot and Ph.D. from Temple University in Philadelphia. He was ordained deacon by Mar Athanasius of Aluva. His joining the Catholic Church had drawn a lot of attention in 1958.
