The city police have arrested four more persons in connection with the case of a gang luring youths from affluent families into immoral activities and later blackmailing them.

A team of the police led by Circle Inspector, Chevayur, Prakasan Padannayil arrested Nizar, aka Babu, 32, of Nazeema Manzil, Malappuram; Nizamudheen, aka Paithal, 28, of Aikkarapadi; Noushad, 29, of Kamburathukuzhiyil, Edacherikunnu; and Abdul Latheef, aka Bava, 34 of Pulikal Veetil, Omanoor; on Wednesday.

The arrests were made on the basis of a complaint filed by Mohammed Shafi, a Malappuram-based businessman.

He had stated that a woman had called him on the phone and told him that he would be introduced to a ‘beautiful woman.’ Last month, the police had arrested Sakeena, 32, of Sultan Bathery and Khadeeja, 34, of Valancherry, both part of the gang, on the charge of immoral trafficking.

G. Sparjankumar, Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode, said the racket comprised 25 persons, including six women. Mr. Padannayil said the search for those absconding had been intensified. The modus operandi of the gang was to obtain the mobile phone numbers of affluent men to be called later by the female members of the gang.

The male members of the gang, in the guise of vigilantes, reach the house and exhort money from the gullible victims. Most of the victims had not complained to the police fearing public condemnation. The racketeers had forcibly taken the photographs of them in compromising positions with the women, the Commissioner said. The gang had amassed crores of rupees, luxury watches, mobile phones, and even got 15 cents of land registered in their name after intimidating the victims. Female gang members had even faked pregnancy to obtain money, he said.
