KOZHIKODE: A tense situation prevailed in Onchiyam area, near Vadakara, on Saturday after clashes between Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers and CPI(M) dissidents’ group. Four persons were injured in the clashes.

The police identified the injured as P.K. Mohanan, K.K. Surendran and P.K. Sunil, all CPI(M) activists, and Kaniyakkandi Srijith of the CPI(M) dissident group.

The Vadakara region has witnessed several incidents of violence between CPI(M) workers and the dissident group in the pre-poll and post-poll periods, besides attacks allegedly by CPI(M) workers on Janata Dal (Secular) offices.

The Memunda village committee of the JD(S) held a dharna on Saturday in protest against the destruction of party flags and boards. JD(S) State general secretary Manayath Chandran inaugurated the dharna.

Security has been strengthened in Vadakara to prevent violence on the day of counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections.

The JD(S) district committee will take out a march to the District Collectorate on Tuesday in protest against the delay in arresting the miscreants who had attacked party Vadakara MLA M.K. Premnath’s car, near Kuttiyadi on April 18. Mr. Premnath is the district president of JD(S). JD(S) State president M.P. Veerendrakumar will inaugurate the march.
