Four accused in the sensational murder case of a couple from Orissa have been found guilty of various charges by the Fast Track Court–II here on Thursday.

The victims, V. Sreedhar (55) and his wife Swaraj Lakshmi (48), were found dead on April 13, 2008 in a rented house at Nagampadom in Kottayam.

The accused Pradeep Borah (28), Prashanth Phukan (25), Deepakar Charkma (22) and Dileep Gogoi (35) were found guilty of charges, including cold-blooded murder and conspiracy under IPC 120 (b), 449, 396 and 320 by the court. Digandar (28), the first accused in the case, had committed suicide in Assam during the course of the investigation.

According to the prosecution that was led by Additional Public Prosecuter Jithesh J. Babu, the plan to murder the couple was masterminded by Digandar.

He was refused a loan by Sreedhar, who ran a rubber-mat manufacturing business in the district. The couple was strangled and choked to death. The prosecution also pointed out that the accused also crushed certain body parts of Sreedhar.

The accused, some of whom who were employees in the manufacturing unit, later fled the scene with jewellery and other valuables.

Pradeep Borah chose to remain in town and was later arrested by the police. His arrest paved the way for nabbing the others, who had fled to their native villages in Assam. It was during this time that Digandar took the extreme step.

The court has observed that the charges, of which the accused were found guilty, may warrant the death penalty.

The court will pronounce the sentence on Monday.
