All assistance will be extended by the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board to make Pattuvam khadi spinning mill a model unit, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries C.N. Balakrishnan has said.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the spinning mill at Pattuvam here on Thursday. The Minister said khadi had transformed from the service sector to the employment sector, manufacturing natural products. Yet, the problems faced by employees here were many, including insufficient wages. The government had taken steps to ensure minimum wages to these workers, Mr. Balakrishnan said. Ninety per cent of workers in these units would be women, the Minister said. Projects were being planned to increase production using better technology and to run the industry profitably.

It is also being contemplated whether khadi should be brought under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to improve its prospects, he added. KVIB chairman K.P. Noorudheen presided. Pattuvam panchayat president T. Latha was the chief guest.
