KANNUR: As many as 66 Forest Rights Committees (FRCs) will come into existence in the district on July 31.

The committees are being formed as part of implementing the Scheduled Caste and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Rights) Act, 2006, an official press release said here on Tuesday.

The FRCs were being formed in 18 panchayats in the district. The committees would be formed in 66 wards bordering forest areas, the release said.

The committees would be empowered to take decisions on protecting the rights of tribals. A meeting of officials chaired by District Collector Ishita Roy had decided to launch publicity campaigns in this regard. Promoters’ would hold door-to-door campaigns in the wards concerned. Kudumbasree units would also be involved in the process.
