Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has dubbed the war against municipal waste a ‘silent revolution’ towards creating a clean and healthy society.

He was inaugurating the distribution of implements for the source level processing of household waste in the municipal area. The Minister stressed the need for combined action from all stakeholders to bring the campaign against waste to a success.

At the source

Kottayam had topped in the list in many social indices, but it has not been able to contain the challenge posed by municipal waste, he said. Exhorting people to desist from agitations on the issue of waste processing, Mr. Radhakrishnan said the real challenge was attaining success in processing waste at the source.

Making it clear that the district administration, municipal authorities and the Sanitation Mission have joined hands with the people in this endeavor, he said doing away with plastic was the key to accomplishing success in the fight against waste.

The Minister said the State government had sanctioned Rs.1.05 crore to the municipality for waste management.

Effective utilisation of the fund would go a long way in implementing waste management measures in the municipal area, he said.
