Youths were drunk, one head constable seriously injured

Youths threw bottles at a shop and religious place

Six of the youths remanded and sent to sub-jail

KATTAPPANA: A six-member gang of youths in an inebriated state attacked a police party on Monday night and caused injuries to five policemen attached to the Thodupuzha police station. The condition of a head constable, who was injured in the attack, was stated to be serious.

According to the police and eyewitnesses, the youths came in a car to an eatery on the market road at Thodupuzha about 10.30 p.m. and drank alcohol in front of the shop. They threw the used bottles towards a shop and a religious place prompting strong opposition from the local residents. The youths engaged in a wordy duel with the locals before a police party arrived on the spot.

Though the police tried to pick up the youths, one them suddenly attacked a police head constable with an iron rod. Soon more of them joined in the attack, the police said. In the melee, four other policemen were also injured. Later, more police forces reached the spot and arrested the youths.

According to the police, head constable Benny George who sustained serious injuries on his head, has been admitted to the Chazhikattu hospital. Head constable Eswaran Potti and constable Ubaid were admitted to the government

taluk hospital at Thodupuzha. Constables Anil and Mathew, who had minor injuries, were treated at the taluk hospital.

Police said that the youths, all relatives, were below 25 years of age.

Those arrested in connection with the incident are Thodupuzha Pattayamkavala Chamakkalayil Amal,18, his relatives Akhil,20, Vimal,18, Gromin,23, his brother Jomin,20 and Muthalakkodam Thurackal Puthanpurackal Bijo Jose, 20.

The youths, who were produced before the Magistrate Court on Monday, were remanded and sent to Muvattupuzha sub-jail.
