Ambulance with body falls into river
Kozhikode: Five members of a family were killed and as many injured when an ambulance in which they were carrying a body plunged into the Kuttiyadi river from the Pattiyatt bridge, near Chakrathalam Ghat, at 2 a.m. on Saturday.
The dead include K. Dasan and Anita, who were taking the body of their son, Vijesh, to their house at Kallachi for last rites. The other victims are their close relatives R. Vijesh, O. Leela and her son, Shinoj.
The couple’ son, who had been employed with N.P.P. Technologies in Bangalore, was killed in an accident there on Thursday, the police said.
The injured included his brother, Vineesh, and sister, Vineetha, and the ambulance driver, Gireesh, hailing from Karnataka. Others hurt are Sarmeesh and Reejesh. They have been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here. The condition of Vineesh is serious.
There were 10 persons in the van. The bodies were shifted to the medical college hospital. Local people pulled out the bodies of the couple after breaking open the front portion of the ambulance. Later, Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed the other victims to hospital. One of them died on the way and three in hospital.
The ambulance left Bangalore at 9 p.m. on Friday. The vehicle ploughed through the handrails of the bridge.
At least 22 people were injured when a private bus fell into a paddy field at Muzhikkal Viruppil near the Government Medical College Hospital here at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The vehicle fell into the field while attempting to overtake a utility vehicle.
