KALPETTA: Five more persons were, on Sunday, arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of V.N. Saseendran, vice-president of Poothadi grama panchayat in Wayanad.
The special investigation team said the accused were Shinu, president, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Pulpally area committee; Jeevan K.P., president, DYFI Pulpally village committee; and George, Baby and Sunil John, activists of the federation.
Jeevan was arrested at Chundakkolly, near Pulpally, and others at S.N. Junction at Kenichira.
They were produced before the Second Class Judicial Magistrate Court, Sulthan Bathery, and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. They have been charged under sections 365 (kidnapping), 368 (secret confinement) and 345 (keeping any person under confinement knowing that a writ has been issued for his liberation) of the Indian Penal Code, B. Udayakumar, Circle Inspector, heading the investigation team, told The Hindu.
P.S. Janardhanan, Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretariat member; T.B. Suresh, party Pulpally area secretary; T.R. Ravi, area committee member; A.V. Jayan, former Poothadi grama panchayat member; and P.K. Babu, Congress (S) leader, were arrested earlier.
Mr. Saseendran was allegedly kidnapped by three persons from the panchayat office on April 20, a few days before the panchayat, ruled by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), was to take up a no-confidence motion against the president. Mr. Saseendran, who was elected to the panchayat as an LDF member, had joined the Congress recently. The motion was adjourned for lack of quorum when it was taken up for discussion on April 27. On the same day, the abductors released him in Koduvally town at 7 p.m. On April 28, the police produced him before the Kerala High Court.
K.K. Viswanathan, vice-president, District Congress Committee, said a dharna would be organised on Monday in front of the Circle Inspector’s office at Pulpally by the United Democratic Front (UDF) Meenangadi block committee. demanding the arrest of all the culprits.
