A general strike will be observed in the inland fishing areas on January 31, the day when the proposed seaplane service project linking tourist destinations in Kerala is to be launched in the State.

At a press conference here on Thursday, State president of the Matsya Thozhilali Federation, T. J. Anjalose, said that the government had released Rs. 7 crore for the project even when it had no money for the welfare schemes of poor people. The Federation alleged that the government has plans to totally waive the tax on aviation turbine fuel which these sea planes will be using.

“The government was embarking on such a project even without conducting any study on its impact on the environment. Even now the Vembanad lake is full of houseboats and floating hotels. The fish wealth has dwindled considerably due to the high pollution in the lake. The project will affect two lakh inland fishermen and more than 20,000 clam collectors who depend on the Vembanad lake,” he said.
