A fire broke out at the HDFC bank building on Shoranur Road here on Thursday causing extensive damage.
The fire erupted at the strong room of the bank on the first floor at 1 p.m. Fire and Rescue Services personnel swung into action and brought the blaze under control within an hour. No one was injured in the accident.
A major crisis was averted as the firemen prevented the fire from spreading to rows of shops. The dousing of fire was difficult as there was only a small entry to the strong room.
Six fire-tenders from Thrissur, Puthukkad and Wadakkancherry took over an hour to douse the flames. The police suspect that a short circuit caused the fire.
Only a detailed investigation will confirm it, they added.
Thick smoke billowing out of the multi-storey building triggered panic in the area. The employees and customers were immediately evacuated when the blaze spread. As the Bank was situated at the busy commercial area, lots of vehicles were parked nearby.
The police blocked traffic on Shoranur Road for a few hours. A huge volume of files was reduced to ashes along with office accessories and furniture. The police and bank authorities have not yet estimated the extent of loss.
