Extensive damage to conveyor facility
KOCHI: A fire broke out at the facility owned by Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) on the Kochi port premises for handling sulphur and rock phosphate on Wednesday evening.
The fire that broke out at around 4.30 p.m. raged for nearly four hours before it was brought under control by 10 fire tenders from the city and two fire tugs.
The fire extensively damaged the conveyor facility and the equipment and it will take at least a week for it to be repaired. The fire broke out while sulphur was being discharged from the vessel Stella Teresa that arrived at the port on Tuesday.
The consignment of sulphur, about 15,000 tonnes, was brought from Ruwiz Fertilizers in UAE.
Only a portion of the sulphur was discharged when the fire broke out. The cause or the extent of the damage has not been ascertained yet.
Top officials of FACT and Cochin Port Trust Chairman visited the spot located on quay 10, at the southern end of the Ernakulam wharf. Two fire tenders from the Port Trust, two from Mattancherry, one from Club Road, one from Gandhi Nagar and a tug were pressed into service to bring the fire under control.
