The four-day conference on diabetes organised by DiabetesIndia began here on Thursday. Experts in the field and scientists from across the country and abroad will deliberate on the disease, which is one of the prime health concerns in the country. Every eight seconds, a person dies of diabetes and two people get affected by the disease.

The delegates at the fifth world conference are expected to chalk out decisive action plans to combat the disease.

Michael Hirst, International Diabetes Federation president, inaugurated the conference. The conference declared metabolic syndrome as the biggest epidemic in the world and called for preventive measures.

The four-day congress will have symposiums, workshops, debates and plenary sessions on a wide range of topics including monitoring of diabetes, awareness of the disease, management, treatment, control and nutrition. Dr. Banshi Saboo, an endocrinologist from Ahmedabad, is the organising chairman of the meet. Dr. Shaukat Sadikot, president of DiabetesIndia and the president-elect of International Diabetes Federation, presided. More than 150 national and 30 international experts in the field are participating.
