Labour Minister Shibu Baby John has said that no construction activity will be permitted on a portion of the Ashtamudi Lake adjacent to the Shakthikulangara Harbour which has been encroached upon by private individuals.
The Minister said this after inspecting the site on Monday morning along with the Revenue and Harbour Engineering Department (HED) officials.
The Minister, who is also the local MLA, gave directions to remove the boulders deposited in the lake.
He also said that the government would take steps to acquire land for the development of the Shakthikulangara-Neendakara twin harbours.
Mr. John instructed the HED officials to speed up the land acquisition process for facilitating the development of the twin harbours. Revenue officials informed him that action under the Kerala Land Conservation Act had been initiated against those responsible for the encroachment. The additional tahsildar concerned had been entrusted with the task of acquiring the required land.
