To mark the tenth anniversary of Manipur's Irom Sharmila's fast to get the Armed Forces Special Powers Act scrapped, the National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM) is holding a fast at Gandh Bhavan here on Thursday.

In a statement, NAPM said the draconian Act had drastically curtailed the human rights of the people north-eastern States and fostered anti-India feelings among them. Through the vast powers granted by the Act, the armed forces are trampling down on the people's human and civic rights and even their right to approach a court of law against the military atrocities.

NAPM said Irom Sharmila, a Manipuri poet and activist, has been protesting against the Act, by going on fast for ten years. The authorities were force-feeding her and keeping her in police custody.
