ALAPPUZHA: Farmers and their families under the aegis of the Kuttanad Vikasana Samithi (KVS) and Farm Net will conduct a march to the District Collectorate and stage a hunger strike there from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
In a statement, KVS executive director and Farm Net convener Fr. Thomas Peelianickal said the farmers were frustrated over the inability of the State Government to procure enough combine harvester machines to harvest the crop on their paddy fields in spite of the colossal damage suffered in the summer rains.
The farmers, accompanied by their families and carrying bundles of sprouted paddy from their fields, would begin the march from the Municipal Grounds at 10 a.m.
A hunger strike would be staged there from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., demanding the immediate deployment of at least 200 combine harvesters in Kuttanad.
The farmers would also demand reimbursement of their expenses for the ‘puncha’ crop as compensation and payment of crop insurance apart from asking the State Government to declare Kuttanad as a calamity-hit zone, Fr. Peelianickal said.
