The Kottayam area committee of the Kerala Karshaka Sangham on Wednesday organised a demonstration in front of the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) office here. The agitation was held in protest against the alleged delay by the government in paying the dues for the paddy procured from farmers.
CPI(M) leader M.K. Prabhakaran inaugurated the protest meet that was presided over by Karshaka Sangham area committee president M.K. Sathasivan Nair.
According to the agitators, the government had decreased the procurement price from Rs.19 to Rs.18 a kg. Moreover, the authorities also failed to ensure the timely distribution of the amounts months after the harvest. The compensation of Rs.20,000 per hectare announced for those who faced crop loss due to the intrusion of salt water was yet to be distributed. The assurance was made by the Agriculture Minister a year ago, they said. The agitators also threatened to intensify their agitations if the government continued to turn a blind eye to their problems.
