PATHANAMTHITTA: Paddy production in Pathanamthitta district has registered an increase of 13,683 tonnes in the past four years, according to the Agriculture Department.

In a statement issued here on Monday, the department said it had successfully launched paddy cultivation in 2,310 hectares that has been lying fallow, besides introducing paddy cultivation in 10 hectares of plain land in the last four years.

The government had spent Rs.16.69 crore in the agriculture sector alone during the period.

Inclusion of the district under the purview of paddy procurement and sanctioning seven paddy warehouses in Upper Kuttanad were the other major achievements.

A sum of Rs.45.14 lakh had been utilised for basic infrastructure development in the paddy sector alone this year, besides Rs.1.46 crore for improving irrigation facilities. Pension was sanctioned to 276 paddy farmers under the Kisan Abhiyan scheme.

It said Rs.3.71 crore had been spent on coconut farming in the district in the past four years.

The ‘Kerasree' project had been successfully implemented in 2,050 hectares, besides spending Rs.62.5 lakh on coconut farming in Upper Kuttanad as part of the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana.

Vegetable cultivation has been extended to 290 hectares to enhance production by 3,480 tonnes in the past four years.
