: The police on Saturday busted a major fake currency racket with the arrest of a man who attempted to circulate counterfeit notes by purchasing jewellery and costly household goods.

Circle Inspector K.V. Venugopal said the bid to circulate fake notes was detected after one Abdul Jabbar purchased gold ornaments that cost Rs.1.80 lakh from a jewellery showroom here on Friday. Jabbar also gave a wrong mobile phone number and claimed he was a resident of Kaithakkad, near Cheruvathur.

When the currency was shifted to the cash department, the personnel grew suspicious and informed the police. A police team led by Mr. Venugopal, on the basis of video images grabbed at the jewellery outlet established his identity by showing the video footages to the local people. He was later arrested.

Jabbar, who had returned from a Gulf nation, confessed to the police that he had received fake currency notes.of Rs. 6 lakh.
