Budding engineering talents came together to unleash their technical and creative skills at the ‘Excel 2010' event that began at the Model Engineering College (MEC) in Thrikkakara on Friday.

A national-level tech fest hosted by the college in association with IEEE, Excel offers a platform for engineering talents to match their abilities with the best in the country. The theme of this year's event is ‘go green'.

Vishnu Viswanath, marketing in-charge of the programme and student of the computer science and engineering branch, said that some of the inaugural events included debate, best manager, workshop on Adobe and a talk by Atul Chitnis, known for his extensive work in the field of Linux and Free and Open Source Software. Mr. Viswanath said that the events scheduled on Saturday include a laser show and a concert by Stephen Devassy, renowned musician.

Some of the other highlights of Excel include hack master, an online event consisting of different levels of problem-solving with different difficulty levels. The problems will be mainly related to web site hacking, password recovery, cryptography and steganography.

Kryptos will witness students solving complicated puzzles and connecting inconceivable clues and hints. Dalal Bull, another attraction, is an online virtual stock market event incorporating real time stocks and virtual money. Excel 2010 is also the venue for Nexus, a national-level robotics competition by IIT Bombay. MEC is hosting the South zone leg of this challenge.

The event will conclude on Sunday.
