MALAPPURAM: A collective of environmental activists came down heavily on the State government and the district administration for celebrating the World Environment Day.

The meeting criticised the government for organising awareness campaigns on the World Environment Day even when it went ahead with projects like Pooyamkutty and hilly highway which were detrimental to the environment.

“Lakhs of trees are going to be felled in the name of constructing the hilly highway,” said Rajan Kalam, environmental activist.

The development of Kottakunnu as a tourist spot entered the second phase by threatening environment, they said.

The slopes of Kottakunnu hill were being dug out, thus posing danger to those living in the fringes of the historical hill in Malappuram, the meet said.
