PALAKKAD: The State government will set up a Centre for Environment Research and Study at Kanjikode near here under the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment to conduct research on pollution control, river management, sand mining, solid waste management etc.

The institute, planned on the lines of the National Environment Research Institute (NERI), will have 50 scientists and 40 other staff. Ten acres of land belonging to the Industries Department, near Fluid Control Research Institute (FCRI) have been identified to set up the centre.

The president of the institute is Chief Minister V.S. Achuthananadan, who is keen on setting up this centre at Kanjikode, which is in his constituency.
