KOCHI: Steps should be taken to ensure rights and remuneration of those writing for films, said M.T. Vasudevan Nair, writer and filmmaker.

He was speaking at a workshop on screenplay writing organised here by the Writers’ Union of Malayalam Cine Technicians Association (MACTA) Federation here on Monday.

The script is the base on which films are made and hence writers play a significant role in the success of the film, he said.

Poet ONV Kurup said that film writers should overcome attempts being made by the media to degrade those working in the film industry.

MACTA Federation general secretary Vinayan said the Writers’ Forum should look into instances of those in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu film industries using stories from Malayalam without getting permission from writers or paying for it.

MT and ONV presented pens to writers. Nearly 100 writers participated in the workshop. Writers Balachandran Chullikkad, Renji Panikker and Lohitadas spoke. MACTA Writers’ Union president Denis Joseph presided and general secretary B. Unnikrishnan welcomed the gathering.
