Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has called upon the employees of the public sector units to ensure efficient service to the people.
Inaugurating the third State conference of the National Union of BSNL Workers affiliated to FNTO here on Wednesday, Mr. Chandy said the Congress party was committed to the continued presence of the telecom major BSNL in the public sector. Although opinions differ, the majority view was for retaining BSNL in the public sector, Mr. Chandy pointed out.
However, under the changed circumstances, people want more and better services and would not hesitate to migrate to private service providers even at a higher price for the services.
The only way to keep the confidence of the people was by ensuring better and more efficient service, Mr. Chandy said. The Congress leader pointed out that the Indian telecom sector had grown in size and efficiency to compete with any comparable services in a developed country. The nation should be thankful to the late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi for his farsightedness in bringing about this telecom revolution.
Thomas Kalladan, district president of INTUC, presided over the function. M. G. Mohanan Niar, general convener, welcomed the gathering. Earlier, state president of NUBSNLW, K. V. Haridasan hoisted the flag.
