NCP demands apology from Italian government

The Italian oil tanker Enrica Lexie was burnt in effigy at the Press Club Maidan here on Sunday under the aegis of the district unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Italian naval personnel on security duty on the ship had opened fire at an Indian fishing vessel on Wednesday evening, killing two fishermen. The Italian marines mistook the fishing boat for a pirate vessel and opened fire.

Compensation sought

The NCP activists demanded that the Italian government should apologise for the faux pas and the shipping company should provide adequate financial compensation to the dependents of those killed. The effigy made of plywood was painted to look like Enrica Lexie . The NCP activists carried the effigy in a march that began from Anandawalleshwaram.

The march was led by State executive committee member of the party S. Pradeep Kumar.
