Aluva Tahsildar supervised the drive

The civic authorities on Sunday took up the eviction of pavement dwellers and other encroachers in front of the Cochin International Airport here.

The operation, which commenced early in the morning and ended by noon, was carried out amidst heavy police security.

Structures demolished

Unauthorised structures put up by around 20 shopkeepers encroaching the roadside were removed during the operation conducted under the supervision of Aluva Tahsildar M.A. Joseph and officials from the Irrigation Department.

During the drive, the officials evicted pavement dwellers occupying the Nayathod irrigation canal and demolished the unauthorised portions of structures erected by the encroachers over the public space.

Road widening

According to official sources, a stretch of the Mattoor-Kariyad road, connecting the Cochin International Airport to the M.C. Road, was currently being widened and that the eviction was carried out under instructions from the District Collector.

Notice served

The authorities had served notices during the last couple of days to the encroachers to move out, but they refused to accede to the demand.
