PALAKKAD: A cow elephant was found dead near the ‘B’ track in the Kanjikode-Walayar forest area in the early hours of Thursday after being hit by the Thiruvananthapuram-Bangalore Express train.

Though the other elephants of the herd managed to escape, they are camping in an area close to the scene of accident. The carcass was found a few metres away from the railway track, forest officials said. The elephant was cremated in the Walayar forest after a post-mortem.

In the wake of a series of such accidents in the recent past, the Wildlife Protection Society has urged the railway authorities to take steps to relay the ‘B’ track outside the forest.
