A regional office to oversee the electrification work of the Shoranur-Kannur railway line started functioning in Kozhikode on Monday.

“The electrification work will begin in a week's time,” said sources from the Public Relations Office of the Railways.

Work supervision

The supervision of the work will be done by a team of Railway staff members under Railway electrification Assistant Executive Engineer Kashmira Singh. Divisional engineer of the electrical wing, K.I. Sulaiman, has also joined the team.

50 persons to work

Around 50 workers are expected to be involved in the work under the supervision of the regional office, according to the Railway sources.

Work is also under progress to open storage facilities in Elathur and Karakkad along the said railway line to stock up the required materials for the electrification work.

The bid has been awarded to a Delhi-based contract company—KEC International Ltd.— for a sum of Rs.29.65 crore.

A time-frame of two years has been given for the completion of the work.

The first phase—from Shoranur to Kuttippuram—is expected to be completed by December this year, according to sources.
