This year’s Onam celebrations will be spread over stages located in eight places in the district, the main one being the stage at the Kozhikode beach.
The organising committee for the event at its meeting on Saturday, presided over by District Collector C.A. Latha, decided there will be sessions in literature, classical dance, and Carnatic music at Town Hall and ghazals and drama at Tagore centenary Hall.
The art gallery and Kuttichira will also be stages for events for the first time since Onam celebrations began. Art gallery will be venue of a painting exhibition and for screening documentary and animation films.
Kuttichira will be the venue for a moplah song festival. At Mananchira Square, there will be folk festival and martial arts display. A floral carpet contest will be held at the Government Teachers Training College, and athletics will be held at the Malabar Christian College grounds.
A colourful pageant, announcing the Onam celebrations, will be held in the city in the afternoon on September 13. It will reflect the cultural character of Kozhikode, a spokesman for the event claims. Besides the District Collector, A Pradeep Kumar, MLA, and film maker P.V. Gangadharan attended the meeting to work out the details of the celebrations.
