An atmosphere of tension prevailed in the town when Kerala Congress (M) activists tried to burn the CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijyayan in effigy.

The KC(M) activists, numbering fewer than 50, arrived at the Central Junction in the town with the effigy when DYFI activists, who also arrived on the scene, started throwing stones. The KC(M) activists retaliated, turning the heart of the town into a battle field. However, the police arrived in strength and chased away the violent groups. The effigy was taken away by the CPI(M) activist during the melee. Some of the mediapersons covering the incident were injured in the stone throwing.
