Protest against police action on activists of youth organisations
A group of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists entered the collectorate complex here and hoisted a black flag on the flagpole on Thursday. The Kollam West police station is situated just across the collectorate.
After hoisting the black flag, the DYFI activists raised slogans against the police and the government. The black flag was hoisted in protest against Wednesday's police action on activists of pro-Left youth organisations during a demonstration in front of the collectorate in protest against the government move to raise the retirement age of government employees. Twenty demonstrators were injured in the police action.
A police team that rushed to the site arrested six DYFI activists while they were about to leave the scene in an autorickshaw. The police then pulled down the black flag. They said that about 10 DYFI activists were involved in the incident.
The police had got intelligence reports that the pro-Left youth organisations, which planned a protest demonstration in front of the taluk office here on Thursday in protest against Wednesday's police action, were planning to hoist a black flag on the flag mast at the taluk office complex here. In view of the reports, a strong posse of the police were posted at the complex. The police had even arranged a water cannon there as a precautionary measure.
The youth activists, who came in a march, were blocked by the police ahead of the taluk office. While the activists were about to stage a dharna, a group of DYFI activists slipped into the civil station complex, just a km away, and hoisted the black flag.
The police gave the names of the arrested DYFI activists as P. Sudhir, Musthafa, Kochunni, Vinod, Alim, and Shibu. The police said that they were later let off on bail.
