Nearly a hundred activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) demolished a temporary bund on Sunday that was alleged to have been constructed illegally across a canal at Kumarakom. The bund had been constructed by a private party across the Kariyil canal near the Vembanad lake.
According to the activists, the unauthorised construction had obstructed the flow of water leading to several concerns for local residents. The obstruction had led to stagnation of hyacinth and waste materials, in addition to having become a blockade preventing passage for the canoes of fishermen.
Despite having submitted a complaint at the village office requesting the demolition of the bund, the authorities were indifferent to their requests and failed to adopt the necessary action, the activists alleged. The apathy of those concerned had compelled the local residents to remove the bund and clear the canal, they said. The protest commenced at around 11 a.m. and was launched by the CPI(M) area secretary M. K. Prabhakaran. DFYI leaders Satheesh V. Thampi, P.S. Aneesh and Mathew Joseph were also among those who led the demolition process.
