From January to October, the police have recommended suspension of 385 driving licences.
KOCHI: The special drive against drunk driving is yielding results, officials of the City Traffic Police have claimed. The results are more evident during the festival season, they said.
Statistics available show a drop of more than 50 per cent in the number of cases reported on a daily basis.
“While we used to register nearly 40 cases of drunk driving daily during earlier drives, this has come down to less than 20 now, even during festival time”, said K.B. Venugopal, Assistant Commissioner of Police, City Traffic (West).
The other traffic circle in the city has also recorded a similar dip in the number of cases registered.
Teams are positioned with alcohol meters, along with a special team for the National Highways, said Baby Vinod, Assistant Commissioner of Police, City Traffic (East).
The City Traffic Police had been going strict about the drive against drunk driving for more than a year now.
From among the cases registered from January to October, the police have recommended suspension of 385 driving licences.
The Deputy Transport Commissioner has already initiated procedures for acting on these recommendations. The Transport officials would send show cause notices to those detected to have driven vehicles after consuming liquor and hear their version before acting on the recommendations made by the Traffic Police.
The Regional Transport Officer has the right to act on driving licences of those from outside the district or even outside the State.
The official need only to alert the RTO concerned after taking action. The City Traffic Police have sent a reminder to the Transport Commissioner to speed up the procedure as the transport department has taken action on only 5 per cent of the total recommendations made.
With the festival season on, the Traffic Police have stepped up deployment of personnel in the field. This will continue till the New Year revelries are over.
