KOCHI: The city branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) will join hands with the World Health Organisation in eradicating leptospirosis. This was decided at a meeting organised at Leptocon 2009, the sixth annual scientific meeting of the International Leptospirosis Society on Wednesday.

Dr. Bernadette Abela, the WHO spokesperson for contagious diseases, in a guest lecture on estimating the global burden of leptospirosis, said that a survey and collection of data of those affected by leptospirosis has already started as part of the WHO’s initiative to eradicate leptospirosis. IMA Kochi and Leptocon 2009 are supporting the cause that would also include Kochi as part of the studies, said Dr. Abela.

The scientific studies on leptospirosis over the past 20 years were presented by Dr. Albert Ko from Brazil while Dr. Jan Clement from Belgium brought out the similarities in leptospira and Hanta virus in a class. Dr. Abhraham K. Paul, president of the IMA, inaugurated the meeting and Dr. Georgy K. Nainan, organising secretary of Leptocon 2009, presided over the meeting.
