The Kozhikode Additional District and Sessions Fast Track Court-I has sentenced a man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed on him a fine of Rs.2 lakh in connection with the case of his wife committing suicide over dowry harassment at Naduvannur four years ago.

Judge P.D. Dharmaraj awarded the punishment to Kiliyadathu Abdul Hameed.

If the accused failed to pay the fine, he will have to undergo one more year in rigorous imprisonment.

The court, however, acquitted the second and third accused, namely Abdul Samad and K. Dawood, both brothers of Hameed.

Hameed married Fausiya at Koyilandy on January 25, 2002.

Her parents had presented him 53 sovereigns of gold and Rs.2 lakh.

But Hameed and his brothers used to physically and mentally torture the victim. Their constant pestering had forced her parents to hand over twice 45 cents of land to their son-in-law, according to the prosecution.

But the harassment continued. Fausiya committed suicide on December 17, 2006.
