Government doctors observed ‘black day’ under the banner of the Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) and wore black badges while on duty in hospitals in Kozhikode district on Saturday to protest against the transfer of doctors of the Mental Health Centre in Thiruvananthapuram following the death of Satnam Singh, who had been admitted to the hospital after he created disturbances at Mata Amritanandamayi Asram at Vallikavu, Kollam.

Defending the decision to observe ‘black day,’ C.J. Michael, president of KGMOA said there was no justification for transferring doctors without a proper inquiry and without following procedures. A protest meeting was held at Government Taluk Hospital here later. Dr. Michael later demanded that the patient-doctor ratio in mental hospitals should be 10:1 and that services of sufficient supporting para-medical staff should be made available.
