: Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan said here on Monday that delay in prosecution of the Italian marines who had had been arrested on charges of killing two fishermen would be resisted by the working class backed by Left parties.
Addressing a dharna organised by the CITU-affiliated Kollam District Matysa Thozhilali Union, Mr. Achuthanandan said the delay in arresting them had raised serious questions. “Was it because the marines hailed from the land of Ottavio Quattrocchi,” he asked.
Mr. Achuthanandan said the dependants of the two fishermen should be given adequate compensation. The government should also take care of the education of the children.
Addressing the dharna, P.K. Gurudasan, MLA, said the authorities should ensure security for fishermen.
District president of the union J. Mercykutty presided over the programme.
The dharna was organised to press the demands for adequate compensation for the dependants of the two fishermen and security to the life of fishermen, and registration of a murder case against the marines responsible for the killing of the fishermen.
