First phase of agitation from September 20

Thiruvananthapuram: The Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) has decided to launch an agitation against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government's anti-people policies. The first phase of the agitation will begin on September 20, party president K. Muraleedharan said here on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Muraleedharan said the LDF's 100 days in power had proved that its Government was a miserable failure. Farmers' suicides continued to take place. The Government was groping in the dark to find a solution to the self-financing professional colleges issue, with more than 30 per cent of those who ``got admissions'' likely to lose it. The LDF partners had openly stated that the `mafia' had permeated in all sectors.

He said the party's district committees had been given full powers to take decisions on contesting the byelections to various local bodies subject to the ratification of the election committee.

Asked about T.M. Jacob's reported meeting with Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala, Mr. Muraleedharan maintained that Mr. Jacob had denied his meeting with the KPCC leader at a DIC(K) executive meeting on Wednesday. "We trust Mr. Jacob," he said when pointed out that Mr. Chennithala had disclosed that Mr. Jacob had met him.

Mr. Muraleedharan said the party would take strong action against those who went against its proclaimed positions.

Party leaders could openly express their views in party forums, but once the party formulated its positions, all were bound to stick to it, he said in an oblique reference to the stand taken by Johnny Nellore.

Mr. Nellore had come out against the DIC (K)'s decision to contest the Koothattukulam byelection to the Ernakulam district panchayat.
