“We will ensure security and development while maintaining the ecological balance,” says Navy

Kochi: Vice-Admiral Vijay Shankar, Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), said at Port Blair on Saturday that the issues of security and development of the Andaman and Nicobar islands are two sides of the same coin.

Speaking at a two-day seminar on the topic, the Vice-Admiral said that security without development was pointless while development without security would be like an able boxer with his guards down.

“The ANC has always been a catalyst in the development of these islands. We will ensure that security and development [of these islands] is achieved while maintaining the ecological balance”.

The seminar on the islands’ development was inaugurated by former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Friday. Deliberations on topics ranging from the strategic and geopolitical overview of the region, evolution of strategic concerns, determinants of security of the islands and the interests of China and other regional powers in the region were held during the seminar.

“It justifies the ANC’s mission statement: The nation’s ‘Look East Policy’ is the engine that will drive the functioning of the ANC in the near-to-intermediate future,” Wing Commander Mahesh Upasani, chief public relations officer (defence), Kolkata, said in a media release.
