KOLLAM: People living at Njettayil, near Keralapuram, on the outskirts of Kollam city on Monday laid siege to the office of the Kollam Assistant Excise Commissioner demanding the closure of a toddy shop that has been functioning at Njettayil since the last couple of days. The demonstrators comprised a good number of women and children.

The demonstrators, under the banner of the Njettayil Jankeeya Samara Samithy, alleged that though the shop had been given a permit to function in a different area, it had begun functioning from Njettayil. The protesters demanded cancellation of the licence of the shop.
