PALAKKAD: The Public Interest Forum, a voluntary organisation, has demanded the Central and State governments to inquire into the causes of the frequent accidents at fireworks manufacturing units and temple festivals where fireworks is used in large quantity violating all explosives and sound control rules.

The Forum, in a memorandum to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister, said that banned explosive items like dynamites were used widely in Kerala.

The Revenue and Police Department officials who were authorised by the government to regulate and control the manufacture and use of explosives and crackers are not taking action to implement the law. They are allowing the fireworks manufacturers to violate the rules resulting in tragedies like the one at Thrithala on Thursday in which five people lost their lives.
