KANNUR: Mahila Congress State president Shanimol Usman has accused the police of being derelict in arresting the culprits behind the killing of a woman and a child in two separate cases at Cherupuzha here.

Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, Ms. Usman said that the police were yet to identify the assailants behind the killing of Ajitha, a housewife, at Cherupuzha.

The police had also showed negligence in arresting the culprits involved in the death of a child belonging to a nomadic family staying at Cherupuzha, she said.

She said that the Mahila Congress had planned a course of agitation against the delay in nabbing the culprits involved in the two incidents. Ms. Usman said that the argument of the police that the local people were not co-operating with the investigations into the incidents was irresponsible and intended to save the real culprits.

Government criticised

She said that the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) was now pursuing a policy of backtracking what it had said while in Opposition.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and other Ministers, who had come to power with the announcement that those who molested women and those involved in sex rackets would be locked up in 24 hours, were now keeping studied silence on these issues, she added.

`Distortion of history'

Ms. Usman also said that allocation of Rs.10 lakhs in the Budget to develop the Punnapra-Vayalar agitation memorial into a museum was an affront to the struggle for Independence.

Though the Punnapra-Vayalar agitation was an important struggle in the State, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government was trying to distort history by projecting the agitation as the most important part of the struggle for Independence.
