Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate in the Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency A.N. Shamseer filed a defamation complaint against RMP leaders K.K. Rema and N. Venu in a Vadakara court on Monday.

Mr. Shamseer accused Ms. Rema and Mr. Venu of making defamatory statements and a ‘character assassination’ bid at a press meet here on April 5. Ms. Rema and Mr. Venu, RMP State secretary, had alleged that Mr. Shamseer was in touch with Kirmani Manoj, sentenced to life imprisonment in the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case. They had produced a ‘copy’ of the ‘mobile phone details.’

Subsequently, the RMP leadership said they had e-mailed a complaint to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala seeking a probe into the alleged link between Mr. Shamseer and Kirmani Manoj.

Mr. Chennithala, responding to media queries in Wayanad, had assured action on obtaining the complaint. He said the complaint would be forwarded to Additional Director General of Police N. Shanker Reddy, who heads a Special Investigation Team probing the conspiracy angle in the 2012 murder.

K. Viswan, advocate of Mr. Shamseer, said a second complaint was also simultaneously filed against Mullappally Ramachandran, the UDF candidate from the constituency, on the same count.

“The UDF candidate had taken a cue from the RMP and made defamatory remarks about Mr. Shamseer shortly after the press meet,” Mr. Viswan said.

The lawyer said the statements were made by Ms. Rema, despite her knowing that the phone number was not that of Kirmani Manoj.
