The State government should take steps to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar to ensure the safety of the thousands of people living in the districts downstream, Kerala Congress (B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai has said.

Addressing mediapersons at the Government Guest here on Monday, Mr. Pillai said recurrent earthquakes had raised fears of a dam collapse and the people were living in fear.

Urgent action

“Urgent action is the need of the hour. A new dam can be constructed even without demolishing the old one. The can be completed in two years,” he said.

Political parties in Kerala and Tamil Nadu should desist from playing vote bank politics.

The leadership should accord top priority to the safety of the people, he said.

Water supply

The water needs of Tamil Nadu should also be addressed. Tamil Nadu, which opposed the idea of a new dam, should ponder over the possible disaster, Mr. Pillai added.
