Says Palakkad district has potential for development of dairy sector

: A two-day seminar on ‘‘Changing agriculture scenes and practices,’’ organised by Doordarshan Kendra, concluded here on Wednesday. The seminar identified the dairy sector as a major area for development in the district.

Speaking on ‘‘Dairy and connected sectors,’’ B. Ashok, Vice Chancellor, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University said that Palakkad district had big scope for the development of dairy sector as it was an agriculture-dominated area.

He said that 22 per cent of the total milk produced in the State was from Palakkad. But the dairy sector should be modernised from the existing traditional way of cattle rearing. The area should have cattle that suited the climatic conditions of Palakkad, he said.

‘Implement report’

Farmers, who spoke at the seminar, said the Swaminathan Commission recommendation of 50 per cent profit from dairy sector to the farmers should be implemented.

They said that there was no marketing problem for milk in the district. The government subsidy for dairy development was not reaching the farmers.

More subsidy should be given for modernisation and diversification of its value-added products, they said.
