Crowded buses on Chittoor route

print   ·   T  T

Buses on the Kacheripady-Chittoor route are always overcrowded to the point of suffocation. Now with the alternative routes to be effected as part of North overbridge demolition, the situation is simply going to get worse. The time 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. is when the crowd is at its peak. My suggestion is that more private buses be introduced on this route. People are subjected to ill treatment throughout the bus ride. The bus conductors even have the audacity to encourage more people in when it's clear that the bus can't take in more load. Aren't there any laws restricting the number of passengers?

Poor diagnosis

Recently, for some general medical problems, I consulted three senior specialists at a leading hospital on MG Road. I was advised to do multiple blood tests, an ultrasound scan and a CT scan, and then prescribed some medicines. At no time did any of these doctors even touch me. My father was a leading medical practitioner and he used to say that the most fundamental aspect in examining a patient is palpation, percussion and auscultation (methods of physical examination for diagnosis). Not only do these help in diagnosis, but also serve to reassure the patient and also help to diagnose a hidden condition.

Easing traffic problems

This refers to the demand from various quarters for reviving the Old Ernakulam Railway Terminus into a railway station for the proposed MEMU services. I am of the view that this may not be the best possible solution. The alignment of the railway line to this station is such that traffic to and from the southern side cannot be accommodated there. Instead, developing a new facility at Kathrikadavu / Thammanam will facilitate both North and South-bound traffic and the proximity to the Vyttila mobility hub will be an added advantage.

Railways could think of swapping the land at Old Terminus and the rail corridor there with the Corporation / GCDA for more space at Kathrikkadavu/ Thammanam.

The land near the old station can be used for constructing a commercial complex with a terminal for buses from Cherai/ Vypeen/ Parur etc. so as to decongest High Court Jn.The Rail corridor can be used for developing a new road to Vaduthala with an overbridge at Pachalam, which will also help in decongesting Chittoor Road to the north of Kacheripady.

More policemen needed

This has reference to the news report on the scarcity of policemen to handle the traffic in the city and the City Police Commissioner's request for more personnel for the purpose. It is true that there is not enough police personnel deployed in the city. A city like Kochi where people are very much disorganised are vulnerable to troubles from organised groups. So the common man has nowhere to look to. So the decision to request more police personnel is justified. Till it is granted, it is more desirable that the department attend to only those works which are most essential for the common people. Trivials like helmet violation can be ignored.
