Journalist and journalism educator Madavana Balakrishna Pillai has been chosen for the inaugural Swadesabhimani Award of Creative Council of Indian Writers.

Mr. Madavana Balakrishna Pillai, who is Head of the Journalism Department of Mahatma Gandhi University- Kottayam, and a regular contributor to Malayalam newspapers, was chosen for the award by a jury consisting of historian M.G.S. Narayanan; C.P. Rajasekharan, former Director of All India Radio and broadcast journalist; and K. Ambika, columnist and granddaughter of legendary journalist Swadesabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai.

Function

Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran will give away the award on September 26 at Kozhikode Sports Council Hall at a function organised to mark the anniversary of the deportation of Swadesabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai from Travancore for his anti-establishment newspaper articles.

The award consisted of a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 and a citation, Mr. Rajaseharan, jury-member, said on Monday.
