Congress leader sees tie-up in Ponnani

MALAPPURAM: Mangalam Gopinath, Congress leader and director of the Seva Dal State Board, here on Tuesday denounced the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for allegedly tying up with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Abdul Nasir Maudany.

It is strange that the CPI(M) has now found the Indian Union Muslim League as the number-one communal party even when the former works together with the PDP in Ponnani, Mr. Gopinath said.

He said it was the CPI(M) which first declared the PDP a communal and fundamentalist party, and criticised the Congress leader Oommen Chandy when he visited Mr. Maudany in jail on humanitarian grounds.

Mr. Gopinath said the attempts by the CPI(M) to form a third front as an alternative to the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would be a futile effort. This effort had begun way back in the 1960s, and if at all it had helped anyone, it was none other than the Bharatiya Janata Party, he said.

He said the anti-government trend visible among the electorate in the State would reflect in the Lok Sabha elections. He said the State government was a failure.
