MALAPPURAM: The Communist Party of India(Marxist) (CPI-M) in West Bengal is worse than the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State treasurer P.K. Kunhalikutty said on Friday.

Mr. Kunhalikutty, who is in charge of party affairs in the absence of general secretary E. Ahamed, was talking to mediapersons here.

Lashing out at the CPI(M) for the death of 11 people at Nandigram in West Bengal on Wednesday, Mr. Kunhalikutty said the CPI(M) was doing in West Bengal what the BJP had done in Gujarat.

`Against minorities'

He said the Sachar Committee Report had shown that the CPI(M) in West Bengal was against minorities.

"In Kerala, the CPI(M) says it stands with the minorities... . Some Muslim organisations believed this and supported that party during the recent elections. It is time for those organisations to do a rethink," he said.

Mr. Kunhalikutty said the police firing at Nandigram and the incidents that followed were an indicator of the CPI(M)'s attitude towards the minorities.

He said Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan had opposed many development schemes introduced by the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government, including the ADB loan and the GIM. But today, Mr. Achuthanandan was forced to toe the ADB line.

He said the IUML had always opposed communalism.
